Two Months Later…
Looking at the date on my last post, I can see it’s been nearly 2 whole months since I’ve
had the opportunity to update my site. A lot has happened in the past 2 months, let’s do a quick update.
Perhaps the main reason why I haven’t been able to write any more articles is because I got a summer job, alhamdulilah. I’m working at the Apple Store in Woodfield Mall in Chicago as a Mac Specialist (a fancy term for a sales guy). Alhamdulilah I’ve been working nearly 40 hours per week trying to make as much money as I can during the summer.
A typical summer day for me before starting my job was that I’d wake up at about 11:30AM, walk around the house or surf the net until dhuhr, pray, eat, work out, hang out with friends, then come home and go to sleep. I didn’t think working a lot of hours was going to be something I’d end up liking, but I really can honestly say it’s the best way to spend a summer. It keeps you busy and in the cycle of the school year, waking up in the morning and doing stuff during the day - not to mention you get paid! Alhamdulilah times a thousand for the blessing of having a job.
My local community masjid, Islamic Foundation in Villa Park, was/is in dire need of a solid youth organization to support the up-and-coming generation. Alhamdulilah a few of us brothers stepped up to the challenge, and by the grace of Allah, were able to solidly get something going. We play basketball every Friday night for a few hours between Maghrib and Isha and continuing after Isha, and we plan on starting to have a short weekly talk to remind ourselves of Allah and the reasons and purposes for being an active Muslim. If you want any information on the youth group feel free to check out the website or shoot me an email at abdelrahmanmurphy@gmail.com.
And last, but most definitely not least, I’ll be getting married insha Allah this Friday. For those of you who’ve been in the proverbial loop, it’s been a long time coming alhamdulilah. After a little over 2 years of being engaged, my fiancé and I are finally tying the knot. Make du’aa for us insha Allah, and ask Allah to bless us and our families and make us a couple that pleases Him, and to protect us insha Allah. For those of you trying to get married, I have valuable advice: don’t give up trying. People who are familiar with my situation know the obstacles my fiancé and I had to hurdle, and the main lesson we learned is that Allah rewards patience and perseverance as long as you stay on His way and stick to the straight path. Masha Allah, alhamdulilah things worked out for us and insha Allah they will for you too. Increase your prayers, make du’aa in the night, ask Allah for guidance, and don’t give up insha Allah.

‘May Allah bless for you (your spouse) and bless you, and may He unite both of you in goodness.’
A lot of people ask how my fiancé and I met due to the fact that I’m from Chicago and she’s from Memphis. We both made a deal that if it ever did actually happen, we’d both write, on our respective blogs, a brief explanation of how we met, despite how embarrassing it may or may not be - here goes!
In early 2006, I hopped on the Xanga.com bandwagon and started my first blog to communicate my thoughts, reflect upon the Qur’an and Sunnah and to remind myself and others through those reflections. I hope they’ve been somewhat beneficial insha Allah! So anyways, while perusing the Xanga community, I noticed another blog that caught my eye. I really enjoyed the down-to-earth writings and vibed well with the sister’s understanding of the deen. I left a comment on her blog complimenting it, telling her that she’s doing a good job. She reciprocated, commenting on my blog on some of my posts. After commenting back and forth, she asked if I could write a couple of articles for her to use. After giving her a couple and noticing that we clicked, we also discovered that we were both part of AlMaghrib Institute in our respective communities. I decided to see if there was any mutual interest, and alhamdulilah there was. We then worked together discussing volutneering for AlMaghrib, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Abridged version: Even though the official story is that we met through AlMaghrib, technically we first met on Xanga. There, I said it. Subhan Allah, no one can avoid Allah’s plan, even if it’s through the internet!

Thanks, Xanga.com!
After a very eventful two months, I’m happy to say that insha Allah I’m back to writing regularly on here. Insha Allah we all can benefit with some reminders, and insha Allah I can make them a bit more regular.
